The Rhodora
On Being Asked, Whence Is The Flower?
In May, whensea-winds pierced our solitudes, 五月,海風(fēng)刺透靜寂

Spreading itsleafless blooms in a damp nook, 葉空,花滿(mǎn),遍綴濕地
To please thedesert and the sluggish brook.
The purple petals, fallen in the pool,
Made the blackwater with their beauty gay;
Here might thered-bird come his plumes to cool, 緋鳥(niǎo)或暫歇涼
And court theflower that cheapens his array.
Rhodora! if thesages ask thee why若問(wèn)汝何以
This charm iswasted on the earth and sky,
Tell them, dear, that if eyes were made for seeing,
