為了提高人們對 HIV 病毒感染蔓延而造成的艾滋病流行的認識，并為那些因艾滋病離世的人們哀悼，1988 年，世界衛生組織（WHO）將每年的 12 月 1 日定為世界艾滋病日。選擇 12 月 1 日這個(gè)日期，是因為第一例艾滋病是在 1981 年的這一天被診斷發(fā)現的。而“世界艾滋病日”這個(gè)概念最早是由世界衛生組織全球艾滋病項目（UNIAIDS）的兩位新聞官詹姆斯· W ·邦恩（James W. Bunn）以及托馬斯·內特（Thomas Netter）于 1987 年 8 月提出的。
