Michelle Jade: I explore the themes of transformation and personal growth by painting characters jumping, jumping, and jumping into the next phase of life. While I expect the subject of change to be Evergreen to me, I want to explore movement and emotion in a new, dynamic way.
My latest work captures the wide range of experiences, feelings and emotions a character might encounter at a show, carnival or amusement park. Carnival is an invitation to embrace the world with a sense of possibility and boldness. The lights, movements, sounds and smells take you out of your head and you begin to play with your fears and inhibitions. When you step through the door or behind the curtain, you become part of the act.
This series of paintings challenges me, because the work itself invites the viewer into the world, to challenge themselves, to free themselves from fear. When we invite ourselves to be drawn to our imaginations and fantasies, and to stop hesitating, we discover a deeper connection with ourselves.
There are quiet moments in life, and there are also moments of excitement. My own life feels a bit like an exciting, pleasant journey, accompanied by climbing, falling and spinning. I also wanted to get back to work and couldn't wait to get out of the car.
To capture these concepts, I took a lot of photos of various models. The images were selected into a series, the composition developed, and I began systematically painting on multi-layered acrylic panels.
My style developed under the guidance of distinguished professors at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California, where I received an MFA in representational painting. My drawing support system was designed in 2009 after a series of personal drawing studies on mylar paper, an almost obsessive desire to draw, and a long trial and error.
