這是一首表達愛(ài)情的歡樂(lè )和痛苦交織在一起的錯綜復雜情感的歌曲。歌曲巧妙地運用了生活中紅、藍、綠、灰和黑這幾種基本色調惟妙惟肖地表現了一個(gè)失戀者對自己和戀人熱戀期的美好的回憶以及失戀后的孤獨，憂(yōu)郁，沮喪，失落，悔恨和無(wú)奈的情感。藍色在英美文化和一些其它西方文化中常常象征憂(yōu)郁，惆悵，壓抑，悲傷。因此這首歌又可譯作《愛(ài)情是憂(yōu)郁的》。這首歌其實(shí)是一首法國歌，1967年由法國作曲家André Popp 作曲，歌詞也是法國人Pierre Cour 年用法文寫(xiě)的詞。以后才由Brian Blackburn 為這首歌寫(xiě)了英語(yǔ)歌詞。第一次演唱這首歌的是一個(gè)代表盧森堡參加歐洲電視演唱大賽，名叫 Vicky Leandros 的希臘歌手。她演唱的這首歌榮獲那次比賽的第4名。從此這首歌就在全世界傳開(kāi)了。首先是在日本和加拿大演唱后獲得了成功。然后這首歌先后被翻譯成德語(yǔ)，意大利和荷蘭語(yǔ)演唱，都深受音樂(lè )愛(ài)好者的歡迎。很多歌曲演唱大賽的選手都用它作為參賽曲目。很多世界著(zhù)名的樂(lè )隊如法國的保羅-莫里哀樂(lè )隊，德國的詹姆士-拉斯特樂(lè )隊，英國的曼陀瓦尼樂(lè )隊等，以及著(zhù)名演奏家如理查德-克萊德曼都紛紛演奏這首曲子，將其錄成唱片，在世界范圍內發(fā)行，很暢銷(xiāo)。亞洲人，特別是中國人對這首歌和曲子更是情有獨鐘。不少港臺早期拍攝和制作的影片，電視劇中都用這首曲子作為背景音樂(lè )。
