Sometimes we forget the right word, or we realise as we're speaking that we don't know the word we need. This can often happen in the PET Speaking test, where you're under pressure and don't have a lot of time to think.
In these situations, there are three things you can do to prevent you from going completely silent!
- define it
- describe it
- use a synonym
Here are some examples you can use to refer to a cheese-grater (kitchen implement to cut cheese into very small pieces.)
Defining
You can use it to…/ It's something you can use to… (cut cheese into small pieces)
It's used to … (cut cheese into very small pieces)
Describing
It's made of (metal / plastic / glass / wood / material / paper)
The top is narrower than the bottom.
There are small holes down the sides.
Use a synonym
It's like a … / It's a bit like a … / It's similar to a … / It's a kind of… (knife)
