STEM一詞在奧巴馬總統于2013年提出新的移民政策中一直提到，那STEM到底是什么呢？其實(shí)，STEM代表的是四種不同專(zhuān)業(yè)的大方向，S代表Science科學(xué)，T代表Technology科技，E代表 Engineering工程，M代表 Mathematic數學(xué)。

由于美國目前經(jīng)濟發(fā)展狀況，與STEM相關(guān)的工作缺口非常巨大，因此政府給出不少優(yōu)惠政策幫助相關(guān)專(zhuān)業(yè)的畢業(yè)生就業(yè)——除了為本地學(xué)生提供的獎學(xué)金以及畢業(yè)后的高薪資待遇，對外國留學(xué)生則是提供長(cháng)達3年的H1-B工作簽證，而最近希拉里甚至提出當選后將讓STEM專(zhuān)業(yè)研究生和博士留學(xué)畢業(yè)生能直接申請綠卡。
