My father and I were very close. I loved pleasing him, and he was always proud of my success. If I won a spelling contest at school, he was on top of the world. Later in life whenever I got a promotion(提升), I’d call my father right away and he’d rush out to tell all his friends. In 1970, when 1 was named President of the Ford Motor Company, I didn’t know which of us was more excited.· Like many native Italians, my parents were very open with their feelings and their love — not only at home, but also in public. Most of my friends would never hug(擁抱) their fathers. But I hugged and kissed my dad at every opportunity — nothing could have felt more natural. He was a curious man who was always trying new things. He was the first person in Allentown to buy a motorcycle. Unfortunately, my father and his motorcycle didn’t get along too well. He fell off it so often that he got rid of it just a month after buying it. As a result, he never again trusted any vehicle with less than four wheels. Because of that motorcycle, I wasn’t allowed to have a bicycle when I was growing up. Whenever I wanted to ride a bike, I had to borrow one from a friend. On the other hand, my father let me drive a car as soon as I turned sixteen.
35. When 1 won a contest at school, my father would ________.

One day a philosophy(哲學(xué)) professor stood before his class and picked up a large empty glass bottle and filled it with rocks. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. He then added a box of pebbles(鵝卵石)to the jar, shaking it lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks. “Is the jar filled now?” The students said yes.
But then he poured a bag of sand into the bottle. The sand filled in everything else. Once more he asked if it was full and after some thinking they said that it was.
The professor then opened two cans of beer and poured them into the jar. The students roared at this demonstration(證明, 論證).
The professor spoke again, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things in your life: your family, your partner, your health, your children… things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter(要緊), like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else. The small stuff(材料,東西,題材). If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks”. “The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take care of the rocks first. The else is just sand.”
Then one of the students asked what the beer represented.
“It just goes to prove that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of beers.’’
38. What do rocks represent according to the passage?
A. Things you have to do every day, like cooking and washing.
B. Things without which you can’t live, like house and job.
C. Things that make your life full, like your family, children, partner and health.
D. Things that help to relax yourself, like reading and watching TV.
39. What can we learn from the passage?
A. We should observe carefully when the teacher is doing the experiment.
B. Never spend time and energy on the small stuff.
C. Beer is necessary for life.
D. Take care of the most important things first.
40. What do you think of the professor?
A. Strict and thoughtful. B. Wise and humorous.
C. Distinguished and sociable. D. P1easant and ridiculous.
41. Why did the professor do this demonstration?
A. To teach students the philosophy in life.
B. To teach them how to put more things into limited space.
C. To show the students when the jar can be called full.
D. To make students know the order of doing experiments.

The coffee plant, a small tree which was first found in Africa, begins to produce fruits 3 or 4 years after being planted. The fruit is hand-gathered when it fully grows well and is brown in color. The fruits of the coffee trees are processed where they are produced to separate the coffee seeds from their coverings and from the pulp(果肉). Two different ways are in use: a wet process and a dry process.
The wet process:First, the fresh fruit is pulped(把…制成漿狀) by a pulping machine. Some pulp still sticks to the coffee, however, and this remains is removed by fermentation in tanks. The little remains of pulp is then removed by washing. The coffee seeds are then dried to a little wet thing of about 12% either in sun or by hot-air-driers. If dried in the sun, they must be turned by hand several times a day for even drying.
The dry process: In the dry process, the fruits are immediately placed to dry either in the sun or in hot-air-driers. Much more time and equipment are needed for drying than in the wet process. When the fruits have been dried to a water thing of about 12%, the seeds are freed from their coverings by machines.
42. Look at the pictures, and point out the correct steps of the wet process.
43. The weak point of the dry process is that ________.
A. it is not clean B. it is too simple
C. it needs more time and machines D. it doesn’t do as well as the wet process
44. Give an example to show the work done by hand in the wet process.
A. Gathering coffee B. Turning coffee seeds
C. Separating the coffee seeds from the pulp D. Removing the remains from the coffee
45. Coffee may grow well in ________.
A. hot lands B. cold lands C. rainy lands D. cloudy places

There is an English saying, “Laughter(笑聲) is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into(調查) laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical(身體) exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing. It also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial(有益的).
Other tests haven shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in group of students who listened to different radio programmes. The group that tolerated(忍受) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny programme. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals(化學(xué)物質(zhì))in the brain which diminish (減少,減低) both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics(診所), in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

Boys and girls,
I am glad to have the chance to share with you my experience in Britain for about 10 months as an exchange student. While in Britain, I stayed with a British family and got to learn about the life of common people there. I took a lot of courses, including English writing, English literature, and the history of Britain, etc. During my stay, I went to some pubs with my friends to listen to music or watch football matches. In this way, I experienced part of the British culture. Besides, I visited many libraries and museums and also I traveled to several British cities.
This is really an enjoyable and unforgettable experience, which helped me in many ways. First, I learned to be independent and make some decisions by myself. Second, I got to know more about the differences between Britain and China. Last but not least, I made a lot of friends there and had my English improved, which has enriched my life greatly.
Thank you.
