Han Zhijun has measured a distance of 125, 000 kilometers, about 7767 miles, by foot over the past three decades as electricity inspector working in northeast China’s Heilongjiang province.
Han, together with other eight workers, is responsible for the power transmission safety in a sparsely populated area of Heilongjiang, which requires them to cover 450 kilometers by foot for a round of safety inspection. Near half of the inspection route goes through remote mountains which are isolated from outside world due to heavy snows. The snows also make potential hazards invisible on the road.
Bun, porridge, some pickles and an egg are the typical breakfast for Han. Han said though it is very simple, all his team members value it because once going into the mountain, they will only have cold and dry food to swallow.
The most horrible moment in Han’s memory is the encounters of beasts such as wild boars and bears. He was even forced to hide in a tree for hours. “It’s safer now because people’s approach scares beasts into remoter places,” Han said.
