紐約文化特區——東村
For over half a century, the East Village has been a cultural enclave for musicians, artists, writers, actors, and political leaders who have helped shape the direction of pop art and the modern political structure of today's America. The once bohemian and avant-garde ground zero of New York City is now one of the few bases for edgy music lovers and urban trendsetters. It was in the 60s that East Village saw a huge influx of artistic forces from the tenants who moved down there for its cheap rents. Facing rapid transformation, the neighborhood now stands at a crossroad, trying hard to keep its unique cultural identity in the midst of a rental surge.

Millionaires like the Astors and Vanderbilts once had their homes in the East Village, but following the immigration wave in the 1900s, Irish, German, Jewish, Polish, and Ukrainian immigrants flooded into the same neighborhood. Second Avenue in this area was called "the Yiddish Rialto" in early 20th century. At one time there were even eight theaters in the area presenting Yiddish-language productions of musicals, revues, and heart-wrenching melodramas.

In the 1940s and 1950s, the East Village began its rise as a bohemian quarter, gradually becoming a fully-fledged artists' neighborhood, complete with art galleries, friendly coffee shops and a growing community of writers and artists. Since then, the area has been home to the Beat Generation of the 1950s, hippies in the 1960s, and punks in the late 1970s and 1980s. East Village was all about pop art, anti-war demonstrations, underground films, sexual liberation, alternative newspapers and rock'n'roll. The name "East Village" - created by real estate brokers, then adopted by the area's bohemians - remains current today.

Today, it's still a youth-oriented neighborhood, serving hipsters with experimental music clubs, independent theaters and cutting-edge fashion. New York University is in the area, so you can spot swarms of students during the day. East Village reputedly contains the most varied assortment of ethnic restaurants in the city, from little Indian eateries to McSorley's Old Ale House, a pub that seems unchanged since it first opened in 1854, from sushi rolls to a slice of Ukrainian taste, the Village provides them all. Nearby, the restored Public Theater has been the opening venue for many now-famous plays.

Trendsetters and fashion fanatics can find their way east toward the Alphabet City (named for avenues A, B, C, and D). It's still a little rough around the edges, but with a variety of fun places to eat, drink and shop, and (if you're really getting into the scene) some very cool tattoo parlors.

You can still spot the old spirit of East Village here and there in the neighborhood - probably not as spontaneous and deep set in the roots as the old days, but history repeats itself in many ways. Who says that East Village can't stand at the forefront of artistic liberalism again? At least the old memories of the East Village spirit will always stay, transcending the passage of time.
