哈佛大學(xué)圖書(shū)館是美國最古老的圖書(shū)館，也是世界上藏書(shū)最多、規模最大的大學(xué)圖書(shū)館。有5位美國總統、30多位諾貝爾獎金獲得者曾在這里學(xué)習過(guò)。
1638年，學(xué)校校務(wù)委員約翰·哈佛病逝，他把一半遺產(chǎn)和私人藏書(shū)捐獻給學(xué)校。學(xué)校就以哈佛命名，哈佛的捐獻成為當時(shí)圖書(shū)館的主要財產(chǎn)和資料。經(jīng)過(guò)300多年的發(fā)展，哈佛大學(xué)圖書(shū)館的藏書(shū)達1000多萬(wàn)件，設有100多個(gè)分館。不僅學(xué)校的每個(gè)學(xué)院都有自己的圖書(shū)館，而且還有各類(lèi)專(zhuān)業(yè)圖書(shū)館。分館大部分設在哈佛大學(xué)校園內，有的遠在美國首都華盛頓市，甚至意大利的佛羅倫薩。其中燕京圖書(shū)館收藏有中國的珍貴圖書(shū)；拉蒙特圖書(shū)館是世界上第一個(gè)供大學(xué)本科學(xué)生專(zhuān)用的圖書(shū)館；魏德勒圖書(shū)館是哈佛大學(xué)藏書(shū)最多的社會(huì )科學(xué)和人文科學(xué)的研究圖書(shū)館。
