1. 指身體“強壯的”、“結實(shí)的”(=strong)。如：New 。如：He seems to bethe toughest of all the children. 他似乎是所有孩子中最結實(shí)的。
2. 指物體“韌的”(即不容易折斷)。如：This wire is tougher thanthat. 這條鐵絲比那條要韌。
3. 指肉“硬(韌)的”(即切不動(dòng)或吃不動(dòng))。如：This meat is tough. 這肉吃不動(dòng)。
4. 指事情或工作“困難的”(=difficult)。如：It’s tough findinga job these days. 近來(lái)很難找到工作。This is tough work. 這是棘手的工作。
5. 指態(tài)度等“強硬的”、“嚴厲的”、“不客氣的”“。如：It’s timeto get tough with them. 是該對他們采取強硬措施的時(shí)候了。Hewill be tough on you if you waste his time. 你要是浪費他的時(shí)間他會(huì )對你不客氣。
6. 在口語(yǔ)或非正式文體中表示“倒霉的”(=unfortunate)。如：It’stough on him. 他真倒霉! Tough luck. 真倒霉!
